Our young scientists of 5th and 6th class had the opportunity to test a wide variety of different foods for starch this week. We learned that starch is a carbohydrate produced by plants and is contained in foods from the grain group. The children worked in groups to test each piece of food using an iodine solution mixed with water and applied with pipettes. If the food contained starch it would turn a kind of blue black. If no starch was present the food did not change colour!
