Daily Mile Initiative.
We started the Daily Mile initiative in September 2019 .
All staff and pupils walk approximately one mile each day.
Everyone really enjoys it and feels energised  afterwards.

Swimming
September / October 2019

We completed 7 weeks of swimming lessons in Roscommon swimming pool.
At the end of the seven weeks, each child completed a swimming assessment and many children progressed to the next level.

Sports Hall Athletics
Longford Sports Partnership

Donal Mulligan from Longford Sports Partnership worked with the children from 3rd to 6th Class over a six week period to help develop the children's athletics skills in field events.
We took part in the Sports Hall Athletics competition in February 2020. Students from 3rd - 6th class participated in the various track and field events in Mercy Secondary School, Ballymahon. This was a very enjoyable day and children got the opportunity to participate in events that they had not competed in before.

Sportshalls Athletics is a team event and all track and field events are team based. Teams accumulate points based on performances in each of twelve events - six track relays and six field events as follows –

Track Events                                                           Field Events
1 + 1 Lap Relay (2 per team)                                 Standing Long Jump (3 per team)
2 + 2 Lap Relay (2 per team)                                 Standing Triple Jump (3 per team)
6 Lap Paarlauf – shared relay (2 per team)        Standing High Jump / Vertical Jump (3 per team)
4 x 1 Lap Relay (4 per team)                                 Speed Bounce – 20 seconds (3 per team)
Obstacle Relay (4 per team)                                 Chest Push (Med Ball Push – 1KG) (3 per team)
Over / Under Relay (4 per team)                          Foam Javelin Throw (3 per team)

The competition is enjoyable and the events are neither difficult nor strenuous. Points are awarded in each event based on the aggregate performance of the team members of each school taking part.

Gaelic Football with Paddy O'Connor from Longford GAA
Paddy visits the school every Thursday and takes each classroom for a 45 minute session.
During each session, we are developing and improving our gaelic football skills.

Enda Gillen, from Longford Fitness visited the school for a day.  He organised a variety of mini games with each class grouping. The emphasis was on developing each child's fundamental movement skills. The day was a huge success and was enjoyed by all.

Bizzy Breaks
The Bizzy Breaks programme is from the Irish Heart Foundation.
The Bizzy Breaks have helped the class teachers with the introduction of  more movement breaks throughout the school day. The movement breaks help to ensure all pupils are achieving the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity each day.
