Well done to all the pupils of 5th and 6th class who performed excellently in the end of year assembly! Best of luck to all our 6th class pupils as they move on into secondary school. Our young scientists of 5th and 6th class had the opportunity to test a wide variety of different foods for starch this week. We learned that starch is a carbohydrate produced by plants and is contained in foods from the grain group. The children worked in groups to test each piece of food using an iodine solution mixed with water and applied with pipettes. If the food contained starch it would turn a kind of blue black. If no starch was present the food did not change colour! The children had great fun researching a wide variety of individuals who have contributed to history such as inventor of the telephone Alexander Graham Bell; first man on the moon - Neil Armstrong; to actress and fashion icon Audrey Hepburn. After completing their research each child then completed a small 3-D project in which they had to include some important facts about their chosen person as well as designing the background themselves. A fun project and the results were very impressive and creative! The children of 5th and 6th class had great fun on their recent trip to Sliabh Bawn. Many thanks to our tour guide Tom Costello from Coillte who gave us a very informative guide to how the wind farm works. We learned that each turbine is 130m tall and even has a lift inside of it for the workers to carry out maintenance! On our trek through the forest we got to see the Slieve Bawn Mass Rock which was used during Penal Times when it was forbidden for Catholics to attend mass or for priests to perform mass. We also got to visit the summit where we were able to get a great view of Bord na Móna, the Shannon and even the power station beside the school! We also got to stand right next to a wind turbine and observe how tall they actually are. A great time was had by all! The children began this month's assembly by performing Frere Jacques in canons and rounds on the tin whistle! Hope you enjoy! The children concluded this month's assembly by performing a dance routine called 'Peanut Butter in a Cup'. They had a lot of fun practising and rehearsing for it!
The children had great fun making traditional St. Brigid's Day crosses today out of rushes!
Congratulations to our young scientists of 5th and 6th Class on winning Scifest 2017 in the Community College! The pupils had strong competition from all the local schools and they were delighted with the result! The classes put forward two separate projects: 1) The Density of Liquids 2) The Durability of Paper Towels A huge amount of preparation went into the two projects put forward on the day. The children learned many scientific facts, as well as carrying out several experiments, background research and surveys. Many thanks to Ms. Behan who helped the children turn their surveys and data into charts for the projects. |
